A good Fiji itinerary balances one core decision: how much time you give to a single island versus moving between several. After fifteen trips ranging from 5-night quick stops to 21-night Yasawa Flyer marathons, here is our working framework — five canonical itineraries from 5 to 14 days, organised so you can pick the closest match and tweak from there.

Key Takeaways

  • 5 days: One Mamanuca or Coral Coast resort, no island-hopping.
  • 7 days (the classic): 1 night Denarau/Coral Coast + 5 outer-island + 1 buffer night.
  • 10 days: Coral Coast + Mamanuca OR Mamanuca + Yasawa combination.
  • 14 days: 3-region trip — Coral Coast + Mamanuca + Yasawa (or Taveuni).
  • Special itineraries: stopover (3 days), honeymoon (10 days), backpacker Yasawa loop (10–14 days), Fiji + NZ combo.

The 5-Day Trip

Best for: short stops, single-resort travellers

Five nights is the minimum that justifies the airfare from North America or Europe. With this window, do not try to island-hop — pick one resort and stay put. The transfer time eats too much of a short trip.

Our default 5-day plan:

The Coral Coast also works for 5 days — particularly for families with under-10s who want kids-club access and shorter transfers. See our 5-day Fiji itinerary for a fuller plan.

What to skip on 5 days

Skip the Yasawas — the 1.5–4.5 hour boat ride one-way is too much for a 5-night trip. Skip Taveuni, Savusavu and Kadavu for the same reason; the Fiji Link flight eats most of a day. Skip Suva — there is nothing in the capital that justifies the 4-hour return drive.

Skip multi-island plans entirely. Two days in a Mamanuca resort is the minimum for it to feel like a stay rather than a stopover.

For overlanders considering Pacific stops, 5 days in Fiji is best treated as a single-island recovery break rather than as an exploration of the country.

Budget estimate

For two people on a mid-range 5-night Mamanuca trip including flights from the US West Coast: roughly USD 2,400–3,800 all-in. Backpacker dorm + Yasawa lodge equivalent: USD 1,400. Honeymoon overwater: USD 5,600+.

For full cost breakdowns by trip style, see our Fiji travel guide.

The 7-Day Trip (The Classic)

The pattern we recommend most often

Seven nights is the sweet spot for Fiji. The pattern we recommend most often:

This pattern works for couples, families, honeymooners and solo travellers. The single biggest variable is which outer-island resort.

For our full 7-day plan with day-by-day detail, see our 7-day Fiji itinerary.

Variant: honeymoon 7 days

For honeymoons, drop the bookend Denarau nights and add them to the overwater bure. The extra two nights at Likuliku, Six Senses, or Tokoriki are worth more than the convenience of a buffer stay — and the overwater experience is what most honeymooners flew here for.

Late May or late September are our recommended windows — peak weather at sub-peak pricing.

For the full honeymoon-specific plan, see our Fiji honeymoon guide.

Variant: family 7 days

For families with under-12s, the 7-night Coral Coast variant works better than an outer-island stay. Drive 90 minutes from Nadi to Outrigger Fiji or Shangri-La Yanuca, settle in, use the kids club, day-trip to Sigatoka Sand Dunes mid-week.

For older kids (10+), Castaway Island Resort in the Mamanucas opens up — easier reef access, snorkel-friendly lagoon, the Cast Away film island day trip is a hit.

Our family travel guide walks through resort-specific picks.

The 10-Day Trip

The two-region combinations

Ten nights opens up two-region combinations that are not possible in 7 days. The two we recommend:

For day-by-day detail, see our 10-day Fiji itinerary.

Variant: diver-focused 10 days

For divers, ten days unlocks a meaningful Taveuni trip. Plan: 1 night Denarau, 7 nights Taveuni (Garden Island Resort or Paradise Taveuni) with daily Rainbow Reef dives, 1 night Pacific Harbour with the Beqa Lagoon shark dive, 1 night Denarau before fly-out.

The Fiji Link flights add cost (FJD 320 one-way to Taveuni) but the dive variety is genuinely worth it. Two of the country’s three best dive sites in ten days.

For full diving detail, see our Fiji diving guide.

Variant: backpacker Yasawa 10 days

For backpackers with a 9-day Bula Pass: 1 night Nadi (Smugglers Cove or Bamboo Backpackers, FJD 80), 8 nights spread across Mantaray Island, Naqalia Lodge or Octopus, Blue Lagoon Beach Resort. Total accommodation cost: FJD 800–1,200 including full board. Bula Pass: FJD 695.

This is the canonical Fiji backpacker route. We have run a variation of it twice and consider it one of the country’s most enjoyable budget trips.

For more on the budget angle, see our budget Fiji guide.

The 14-Day Trip

The three-region combinations

Fourteen nights lets you add a third region or do a serious deep-dive on one. The combinations we recommend:

For full day-by-day detail, see our 14-day Fiji itinerary.

Variant: slow Yasawa marathon

For travellers who want to slow down, a 14-day Yasawa-only trip with a 12-day Bula Pass works beautifully. Plan: 1 night Nadi, 12 nights spread across 3–4 Yasawa lodges, 1 night Denarau. Total Yasawa flexibility, time to acclimatise at each island.

We have done a variation of this once (an 11-day Yasawa stay with the 9-day pass) and it remains one of our favourite Fiji trips.

Budget tier flexibility: dorm beds keep the cost under FJD 4,000 total for two people; mid-range bures push it to FJD 8,000–10,000.

Variant: Fiji + New Zealand combo

For travellers from outside the South Pacific, a 14-day Fiji + NZ combination makes long-haul economics work better. Plan: 7 nights Fiji (Mamanuca or Coral Coast), then a 4-hour flight to Auckland for 7 nights NZ road trip.

Air New Zealand and Fiji Airways both run multi-stop fares that bundle the Fiji + Auckland leg at minimal additional cost over a Fiji-only return ticket.

This combination is our most-recommended for travellers from North America or Europe who can spare 16+ days total.

Special Itineraries

Stopover (2–3 nights)

If Fiji is a stopover on a longer route (US to Australia/NZ, or a Pacific-crossing flight), 2–3 nights at a Denarau resort is the standard play. Day-trip to Cloud 9 or the Mamanuca day cruise; do not try to reach an outer-island resort.

Fiji Airways and Air NZ both build affordable stopover options into multi-leg fares — typically free for 24 hours, low-cost for 2–3 nights, full open-jaw beyond.

The Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa or Hilton Fiji Beach Resort are the standard stopover picks — both 20 minutes from Nadi airport.

Honeymoon (10 days)

The canonical Fiji honeymoon plan: 3 nights at Tokoriki or Castaway as a warm-up, then 7 nights at Likuliku, Six Senses or Vomo. The progression lets you settle in at a less expensive mid-luxury property before splurging on the overwater.

Best month: late May or late September. Avoid the July school-holiday peak.

For full honeymoon planning detail, see our honeymoon guide.

Family school holiday (7 days)

For Australian and New Zealand families with 7-night holiday windows: 6 nights Coral Coast (Outrigger Fiji or Shangri-La Yanuca) + 1 buffer Denarau night before fly-out. Combine with a midweek Sigatoka River Safari and a half-day at the dunes.

For the deeper family-focused breakdown, see our family travel guide and school holiday itinerary.

Book 4–6 months ahead — Outrigger and Shangri-La fill for school holiday peaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need in Fiji?

Seven nights is the sweet spot — enough for one outer-island stay plus buffer nights. Five nights works for a single-island short trip. Ten or more opens up multi-island combinations. Fewer than five is best done as a stopover.

What is the best Fiji itinerary?

For first-time visitors with 7 days: 1 night Denarau or Coral Coast, 5 nights at a Mamanuca resort, 1 night Denarau buffer before fly-out. For 10+ days, add a Yasawa segment or a second island region.

Can I do Mamanucas and Yasawas in one trip?

Yes — and we strongly recommend it for trips of 10+ nights. The transfer logistics work well: Mamanuca first (closer to Nadi), then Yasawa Flyer ferry north with a Bula Pass. 3 Mamanuca + 5 Yasawa + 1 buffer is our standard 10-night plan.

How do I plan a Fiji honeymoon?

10 nights is the sweet spot. Plan: 3 nights at Tokoriki/Castaway/Matamanoa as a warm-up, then 7 nights at Likuliku, Six Senses or Vomo for the overwater splurge. Travel late May or late September for peak weather at sub-peak prices.

Is Fiji good for a stopover?

Yes — 2–3 nights at a Denarau resort works well on US-to-Australia/NZ routes. Fiji Airways and Air NZ both offer affordable stopover fare structures. Day-trips to Cloud 9 or the Mamanucas fit easily into a stopover window.

What is the best month for a Fiji trip?

Late May, early June, or September. Peak weather, sub-peak prices, manta-ray season in the Yasawas, and the Australian/New Zealand school-holiday surge is not yet hitting outer-island resorts. See our best time to visit Fiji guide for full month-by-month detail.
